About the Company & Course

The University of Waterloo’s Centre for Work-Integrated Learning (Centre for WIL) focuses on helping students build the skills and experiences they need to succeed in the workplace. By blending academic learning with practical application, the Centre supports students in gaining valuable insights and preparing for their future careers.

PD11: Processes for Technical Report Writing is a course designed to teach students how to create clear, concise, and professional technical reports. It guides learners through the process of planning, drafting, and refining their work, ensuring they can communicate technical information effectively. This course is ideal for students looking to enhance their technical writing skills for academic or professional purposes.

The creation of these course illustrations required a highly collaborative and research-driven approach to ensure they effectively represented the core themes of the course modules. My work focused on close collaboration with the course professor to organize and streamline content, determine key learning objectives, and identify where visuals, such as illustrations and videos, could best enhance the learning experience.

  • Collaboration with the Professor

    • Together, we reviewed the course structure, prioritized essential topics, and removed unnecessary elements to maintain clarity and focus.

    • We identified sections where visuals would have the most impact, such as introducing key concepts, simplifying complex processes, or making data more approachable.

  • Stakeholder Integration

    • Course Developer: Ensured all illustrations aligned with the course’s instructional goals and supported a cohesive learning experience.

    • Copywriter: Worked to integrate visuals seamlessly with written content, ensuring a consistent narrative tone throughout the modules.

    • Ethics Team: Collaborated to maintain ethical and accessible design standards, making the course inclusive for all learners.

  • Research and Design Execution

    • Grounded in research into modern design trends for educational materials, the illustrations were crafted to enhance engagement and usability. I conducted student interviews to gather insights on their learning preferences and challenges, which informed the choice of clean, vibrant visuals and intuitive layouts.

    • Each design employs bold colors like blue and orange to evoke trust and energy while incorporating flowcharts, data visualizations, and interactive elements to guide learners through the modules. The visuals reflect not only the course's technical rigor but also its commitment to accessibility and engagement.

This project highlights the power of collaboration, combining thoughtful organization and cutting-edge design to create an impactful and student-centered learning experience.
